BIKE MAINTENANCE
Here is a tip from our experienced workshop mechanic
Aaron Dobbs on drivetrain maintenance.
Firstly,
make sure you keep you bike clean! You wouldnt go for weeks
without a shower so why deprive your bike of one?
Wash off all mud and debris that is on the bike,
but dont use a high-pressure hose! Your bike will hate it,
as it forces dirt past seals and into bearings and enclosed components
like forks, hubs and rear shocks, creating friction and premature
damage equaling expense!
The most asked question I get is Do I need
to oil my chain? 9 times out of 10 the customer asking the
question will have a thick tar like cutting paste all over his or
her drivetrain. It is very important to keep your drivetrain clean,
as this will reduce excessive wear and keep everything running smoothly.
A citrus degreaser by Pedros,
Weldtite or Finishline
is great for removing buildup on the chain, cassette and chainrings.
The next step is to re-lube the chain. Lube the
chain by applying a fine film to the inside of the chain and run
through the gears a few times. Then wipe off ALL excess lube
from the chain. (This is very important as you are only trying to
lubricate the bushings and plates internally and not trying to make
a paste on the outside of the chain!) Repeat this two or three times.
A good lube? I would recommend Rock
n Roll lube, Pedros
Ice Wax or Whitelightning.
Follow these steps and you are on your way to extending the life
of your drivetrain.
